| I remember getting a jolly from Denbury Camp to Exeter in an Alouette Helicopter with an officer in the AAC after he dropped a General off at the camp that was in June 1963 when I was in NIG wing. It was a great experience to say the least |

| Reading Pete Penfold’s account of the Denbury Camp Assault Course reminded me of the competitions. Being of a small stature and pretty nippy across this maze of obstacles I ended up in the Troop team. I remember on one occasion whilst practicing for the competition being hoofed up the wall by a well built tall Geordie lad as strong as an Ox he was. On this one occasion he put so much effort in to it as I pushed off his shoulders that I ended up in a heap on the ground on the other side of the wall having never touched the top of the brick work on the way over it to the amazement and amusement of Sgt Charlie Batten and the other team members. No damage done thankfully…… |

| Steve Reeves, it's taken 60 years to find that your name is Robert, it must be a Jerboa thing. Harry Hewitt, was called Michael Hewart, and I only found that out by calling his home many years later. His son answered and heard him say 'mum, there is someone asking for Harry his mum says it's an old army friend of your dads. |

| First time out on exercise, grizzled sergeant is boss, ex Parra with an array of medal ribbons longer than my tool kit. Right lads, its simple. You have a tent and you have fresh veg and meat for a meal. 1. Put up your tent and camouflage it. I dont want to find you but stay in this enclosed area. 2. Cook your meal and I will be around to check on the standard. Don't eat it until I have checked it! ( An obvious recipe for disaster but there can only be one loser). As it got dark, me an my mate still hadn't eaten our dinner in a Gorse covered tent that blended beautifully with the hillside. When eventually venturing out it was to discover that Sarge had changed from Jekyl to Hide as he hopped from one foot to the other. Spittin Feathers he was, something to do with a barmaid in the local and being late. There is a lesson to be learned here, but I'm too dumb to know what!<br /> |
