Thanks Steve for enlightening us about JLR s involvement with the Torrey Canyon oil tanker disaster. I remember it well but only from a news media perspective at the time. Only now have I learnt that the JLR were involved. I seem to remember RAF Hawker Hunters strafed the tanker to set the oil ablaze as a means of preventing it slicking the coastline

Taken from the Wire May-Jun 1967 and 7 (Output) Troop go on â??active serviceâ?Ø TORREY CANYON There can be few who have not heard of the large oil tanker which went on the rocks off the coast of Cornwall on 18th March and of the efforts to stop the thousands of tons of crude oil which threatened the beaches of South-West England. The 21st March was our Administrative Inspection Day and preparations were well in hand to received Brigadier Majury Commander 2nd Infantry Brigade and Devon/Cornwall Sub-District. However the Brigadier took charge of the Army opera?¬tions to save the South West beaches and our Administra?¬tion was tasked in quite a different way. To run any military operation a Commander must first have communications and being the only Signal Unit in this part of the country Brigadier Majury requested our assistance. The Regiment quickly de?¬ployed radio detachments and comcen personnel and got a network going. It proved invaluable in the first stages and great credit is due to the P.S. Sergeants and their crews of Junior Leaders who worked so hard. The Brigade also asked for a Liaison Headquarters to be set up at Truro. The Commanding Officer with three young Signals Officers set this up and manned it through the follow?¬ing ten very harrassing days. At Plymouth H.Q. things were buzzing and two R.A.E.C. Officers were detached for watch-officer duties. Meanwhile at Denbury the remainder of the Regiment was by no means idle. At a few hours notice to move the Regiment drew spray equipment protective clothing and boots and prepared itself for exercise Mop-Up. Now all this was taking place towards the end of term and over Easter as well. Trade Tests and education examinations were looming up and the Instruc?¬tional Staff were showing due concern. Just in time however the Regiment was stood down. The H.Q. Truro and the signals commitments were handed over and a very tired CO. and his staff returned to Denbury on 1st April. Messages of congratulations and thanks for the work done were received from the Army Commander and Brigade Com?¬mander.

I previously posted that I was taking Thomson to Court because they changed my flight times which effectively meant we had Night flights on the return rather than Day flights which we had paid for. Like always Thomson say we can change your flight by 12 hours and there is Nothing you can do about it. On Friday I was awarded judgement in the County Court against Thomson. I argued that the ABTA rule applied and overrode their defence of using their T/C s as being absolute. The ABTA rule say that a change on a holiday of less than 14 days can be a significant change where a day flight is effectively changed to a night flight. The judge agreed and I was awarded all my money back + interests + all my costs. Don t let Thomson fob you off saying you Agreed to our Terms and Conditions so get lost. As I have said before this is worst Holiday company in the world and make Huge additional profits from people who have paid deposits and CANNOT GET them back.

Many thanks for the many Birthday wishes on my Facebook and other sites. I am currently in my favourite place on the Planet sandwiched between the med Syria & Jordan. Off the Eilat next week with a quick trip into Bandit country if all goes well. The old spice and trading route ruins along with early Christian related relics are quite fascinating and we ll worth the odd bit of excitement to view and dig around. Some great Roman coins unearthed recently that had fallen down the cracks between the cobbles of some of the roads. It is my plan to be back in Scotland in April do a couple of more re years monitoring and visiting Prisons before perhaps retiring in to oblivion tending the weeds chucks and ducks. I do have a couple of wee cottages ( Flying Pieman has tried one out) if anyone fancies a wee break in New Luce. Meanwhile. Have fun all
