Hi all ex Denbury Boys.
Shown below is a request about support for information and items relating to Ten Tors in it's first years of existence.
Feel free to make contact with the names shown below if you are interested and if you wish keep me in your loop.

I have made contact with the Tony Clark as shown below early last week and sent him some photos of our Kohima Troop teams of 1964 & 1965. Otherwise it's over to you gents and I will view with interest what happens now.

Hope your all in good health as I am here.

Ten Tors 2022

The Ten Tors organisers invite 20 Denbury Royal Signals Junior Leaders alumni, who took part in the earliest Ten Tors expeditions, to join us for lunch in the Officers Mess on Sunday 8 May 2022. Priority will be given to those who took part in the earliest Ten Tors. If other Denbury Boys wish to attend, they are more than welcome but capacity limits invites to lunch. Those not invited to the lunch will find snacks available at various outlets throughout the Camp.

The intended programme, weather permitting, will be:

From 0900 Watch participants complete the 60th Anniversary of the first Ten Tors Expedition. By all means arrive later!

1000 - Tea/coffee in 60th Anniversary tent in the Engagement Area at the top of Okehampton Camp EX20 1QP but go via the centre of Okehampton.

1100 - Welcome by Ten Tors organisers.
1300 - Lunch in Officers’ Mess for 20 Denbury Boys who took part in the earliest Ten Tors.
1700 - Ten Tors Challenge gate closes.
1700 - Disperse but leave earlier if you wish.

Car parking will be available at the entrance to the Camp. Special arrangements can be made for those with a disabled Blue Badge. Would those who wish to attend, please contact Lt Col (Retd)Tony Clark OBE late PARA at clark.zeal@outlook.com giving your name, the year you took part in the Challenge, your Troop, an indication of your subsequent military service and whether you hold a Blue Badge. You can also find me on Facebook at Tony Clark | Facebook.

Celebration of 60th Ten Tors
Ten Tors 2022 will take place, starting and finishing at Okehampton Camp, over the weekend of the 7th and 8th May. We will be celebrating the 60th Ten Tors and also the 70th Anniversary of the designation of Dartmoor as a National Park. As usual there will be a festive atmosphere, especially as we have been unable to hold the Event for the past 2 years. A team from Gryphon School will be taking part in the 45mile Challenge dressed in 1960’s clothing and carrying kit similar to that you used. They will also be setting up a static stand with displays of the clothing and equipment, food eaten and camping kit. They will also be displayng a mock-up of the control headquarters with appropriate communications equipment and progress board.

We are using the photographs on Tony Gask's "Denbury Days" excellent website as a guide and also Steve Wright’s https://www.denburyjuniorleaders.com/ equally useful website as well as the DenburyBoys Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/DenburyCampExBoys/ .

It has been difficult to find all the kit and equipment after 60 years and we are still looking for examples of the balaclavas you wore, denim trousers, the adventure training smock with the front pocket and a copy of the certificate awarded for the successful completion of the Challenge. If you have any of these items stored in your attic and are willing to loan them, please email Maj (Retd) Geoff Cooke on Geoff.Cooke@gryphon.dorset.sch.uk . And, of course, we are looking for even more photographs and memorabilia of the early expeditions.

Specific inquiries are for an understanding of what the camping arrangements were: valise, green light weight blankets, grey bed blankets, sleeping bags? What type of vehicle would have been at Control; Land Rover Series 1 or 2, or Austin Champ?

If you want to get a discussion going about your experiences and memories, I will monitor your Facebook pages with great interest.

Your help in getting it right in tribute to those who paced the way will be much appreciated. If I have made any minor errors, please do correct them and if you feel that more information is needed, let me know and I will add to the proposed Facebook notices.

Can anyone give me the contact number for Jock Kelly please? If not, does anyone know the Hospital in Portsmouth where he is so that I can contact him thru their switchboard. Regards to all. Mike.
PS. Was invited over to Mike and Jill Lally's for dinner on Friday evening. (We are both ex Jerboa Boys, who knew each other at Denbury in 1961.) Lovely time, and remembering our old mates from those days and new ones made at various reunions.

Whilst Ten Tors did take place in 1960, the first real Ten Tors (Open) took place in 1961. If my memory is correct each troop supplied a team to Captain Joyner to test the routes' he had chosen. This was to test timings, bearings and performance/difficulty. Each troop had certain tasks allocated to them for the duration of Ten Tors. Iron troop was responsible for the preparation and erecting, together with maintenance of the camp site on the Top Playing field. There is a photograph of myself, Junior Staff Sargent Kev Donaldson, Sid Vivian and Waky Walker under the sign "Ten Tors" village.

Regarding Mike Lallys post about John Isherwood, he was my yeoman in 227 Afcent Maastricht in 74, last seen at the 50th anniversary. Quite a character but a smashing bloke
