Caught up with this site this morning. Suddenly memories came flooding back. As probably the only American-accented 2Lt at Denbury-and possibly in the R.Signals-I must have stood out as an odd-bod but had a great time with the terrific lads of B-Troop. Just to keep my association with the US we arranged for American Marines to stay for a few days at the camp and enjoy WVS tea and buns and the services of the NAAFI. Happy daze! By the way I worked closely with Colonel Gregory to set up the first Ten Tors tour and for my sins wrote the pop record reviews in the Junior Mercury and reported Denbury for the Signals journal-these were my attempts to maintain my skills as a journo/hack. With 2Lt Paul Hunt we also recorded-badly-the pop sounds of one of Denbury s music groups. In the years between then and now courtesy of MoD and the defense industry-I ve attended a few skirmishes-Falklands Cyprus Beirut and Gulf War I. Been arrested in E. Berlin by the Stasi (for 30 minutes) entered Syria (illegally) been tracked by the Russian-trained security services in India and visited Pakistan s nuclear facility. Spent time with UNFICYP and sailed on several RN and USN aircraft carriers... I d have never done any of this had I not served at Denbury. Now long retired and living in the flat countryside of Norfolk with my wife of 45 years I help write Britain s Small Wars a website that tries to remind folk that the UK has had only one year since 1945 of not being involved in conflict somewhere in the world. In a spare moment please cast your eyes over the site. You may even want to contribute your memories of derring-do far and wide. My best to all David
