This article appeared in The Wire.OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY SOUTH WEST SCOTLANDFriday 8 June began with an early start to enable us family friends and the general public to gather at Cairnryan (nearStranraer) for 6am before the roads were closed to traffic forthe Olympic Torch Relay. The weather was grey and overcastwith the threat of rain imminent. The first torch bearer tostart the Cairnryan leg was Harry Waugh an ex Denbury BoySoldier (1960-1962) who following a full military career wenton to achieve Great Britain Coach of Year in 1993 (Triathlon)and represented Great Britain in the Worlds Open WaterSwimming Championships and act as Great Britain LadiesTeam Manager in the first European Championships (winners).More recently Harry is still the only person to have skiedfrom John O` Groats to Land`s End and was a member of the50th Anniversary Ten Tors Expedition Team of ex Boys in 2010 and last year took part in an ex Boys team undertaking the`Coast to Coast trail in 12 days. The Olympic Torch Relay started with the sponsors vehicles acollection of buses and HGV s bedecked in bright colours andplaying music. These were followed by national news cameracrews filming the Olympic Torch bearer and supportingcrowds and followed by the various support vehicles. Theweather was kind to us and despite the gathering clouds andpick up bus breakdown Harry enjoyed his moment ofrecognition given for all his charitable works over manyyears.Despite the early start and the gloomy weather the turn outof the public was impressive with crowds lining the routethrough Cairnryan with the torch heading northwards toGlasgow following completion of its journey around NorthernIreland and Dublin. There will be few serving soldiers left who will remember theJunior Leaders Regiment Royal Corps of Signals based atDenbury Camp near Newton Abbott during the period 1957-67 when it was disbanded. However any ex boy will attest tothe positive influence it made to their lives of which Harry isa prime example. Well done Harry.
