when in 249 sig sqn farelf every thursday (payday) a group of us used to go to Holland Village and have a T-bone steak with all the trimmings and a pint of beer and the cost of this lovely meal was 1 singapore dollar which was at the time 2/6 in todays money 12 and 1/2 pence value for money. Hello Ivan-Yes its 50 years ago today I left home to earn my first weeks crust which I think was 12s 6d (about 60p). I got on the train at Lancaster and travelled all day on my own to Newton Abbot where I was met by a Junior Wing Sergeant (can t remember who) and taken to Denbury Camp to start my army career.
